Today, we honor the lives and sacrifices of Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy. These three teenage girls, enslaved and subjected to cruel experimentation, are known as the Mothers of Gynecology. As we reflect on the resilience of Black Americans and the significance of Juneteenth, let’s ensure their names are never forgotten.

This month is Perinatal & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) Awareness Day and Maternal Mental Health Month. PPP occurs in approximately 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 deliveries, and the onset is often sudden and the symptoms can wax and wane, even over the course of hours.

PPP can happen to any person who gets pregnant and gives birth, with the most significant risk factors including a personal or family history of bipolar disorder, a previous psychotic episode, or experiencing PPP in a previous pregnancy.

While there is approximately a 5% suicide rate and 4% infanticide rate associated with PPP, It is important to know that many survivors of PPP never experienced delusions containing violent commands. Delusions take many forms, and not all of them are destructive. The majority of individuals who experience PPP do not harm themselves or anyone else.

PPP is always a medical emergency. If you think you or a loved one is experiencing PPP, you should seek help at the nearest emergency department immediately or contact a crisis hotline such as 988 or 741741.

“I was excited and confident about being a new mom again, and had many happy days. I also experienced really frightening thoughts and worries. It felt like it would never end. Even as a social worker with an extremely supportive family, and a lot of protective factors, it was very hard to pick up on my symptoms. It took us too long to notice something was off. I convinced many family members that I was fine. Finally, once my symptoms were obvious, my family, and my partner was beyond persistent in finding me support. Postpartum Support International was an extremely helpful resource. It took a while to find support that was covered by health insurance and to find a perinatal specialist. This is why I became a Perinatal Mental Health therapist.”

Even as a social worker with an extremely supportive family, and a lot of protective factors, it was very hard to pick up on my symptoms. It took us too long to notice something was off. I convinced many family members that I was fine. Finally, once my symptoms were obvious, my family, and my partner was beyond persistent in finding me support. Postpartum Support International was an extremely helpful resource. It took a while to find support that was covered by health insurance and to find a perinatal specialist. This is why I became a Perinatal Mental Health therapist.”
